Dutchmen football squad loses shootout to Hobart, 41-24

, NY – Hobart scored 20 points in the third quarter and rushed for 288 yards in a 41-24 Liberty League football victory over Union College at Frank Bailey Field Saturday afternoon. The Statesmen are now 3-0 and 2-0 in the league while the Dutchmen fell to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the league.
 
Quarterback Nick Strang passed for two touchdowns and 187 yards and ran for 74 yards with a rushing touchdown for the Statesmen, and he was 11 for 23. Junior Woodard had 96 yards on three catches and a score while Steven Webb rushed for 85 yards and touchdown. The Hobart defense produced eight sacks in the victory, and Devin Worthington had a game high 10 tackles with 3.5 sacks for the Statesmen. Hobart finished with 415 yards in offense.
 
Union receiver Connor Gallo had 101 yards and a touchdown with four catches, while brother Justin Gallo had 72 yards on five catches with two scores. Darnel Thomas rushed for 85 yards and quarterback Drew Connolly had 16 completions on 26 attempts for 246 yards and threeTDs. Kevin Quillinan and Steve Modliszewski each had seven tackles for the Dutchmen, who had 328 yards in offense.
 
Justin Gallo caught a 10 yard pass from Connolly to open the scoring with 9:30 left in the first quarter, capping a 10 play, 73 yard drive that started off the opening kickoff. Hobart tied it with 1:29 left in the quarter when on the first play from scrimmage at his own 30, Webb broke free for the 70 yard season long touchdown run. Union started off that kickoff with 1:25 left in the quarter and three plays in, Connolly found Connor Gallo for a 61 yard touchdown for a 14-7 lead with six seconds remaining in the quarter. Union had the ball for 11:57 of the first quarter.
 
The Statesmen tied it with 7:35 left in the second quarter. Bobby Dougherty rushed for a nine yard score to complete a six play, 42 yard drive in 3:47. Union punted with 4:32 left but Hobart fumbled the return at the Statesmen 22 yard line and Joshua Rose recovered for the Dutchmen. They took a 17-14 lead four plays later on Adam Henry's career best 39 yard field goal with 1:58 remaining in the half. After the kickoff, back came Hobart with a first play 83 yard touchdown pass to Woodard and a 21-17 lead. On that ensuing kickoff, a Union player fumbled the return at the Dutchman 15 yard line and James Smith picked it up and ran it in for a 27-17 lead (the point after failed). That score went into halftime.
 
Strang's 15 yard touchdown pass to Troy Robinson with 6:27 left in the third made it 34-17, on a drive that started when Drake Woodard had an interception at his team's 26 and returned it 45 yards. The scoring drive took eight plays with 35 yards covered in 3:37.
 
Union got to within 10 at 34-24 with a Justin Gallo 38 yard strike from Connolly with just 41 seconds elapsed in the third quarter. It was a four play, 47 yard drive that took 1:15 including late time in the third period. Connor Beerworth intercepted a pass for Union and returned it 21 yards to the Hobart 49 with 10:33 left. But the Dutchmen could not capitalize and a nine play drive ended on a fourth down at the Hobart 28. Strang's five yard scoring run capped all scoring with 1:19 left, and the 11 play, 72 yard drive ate up 5:42 on the clock and provided the eventual final, 41-24.
 
Union continues Liberty League play with an October 15 game at St. Lawrence at 1 p.m., while Hobart, idle next week, is back in action October 22 to host league rival Merchant Marine at 1 p.m.
