BOX SCORE
SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College men's soccer team dominated Bard on Saturday in a 6-0 conference win at College Park. The Dutchmen now move to 10-1-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in conference play. Of the 37 man roster, 34 players saw the field during the match, including 12 freshmen. Junior forward
Sebastiaan Jansen scored the winning goal, taking his season total to nine goals and eight assists for 26 points. He currently leads the Liberty League for goals scored, most assists and most points.
Jansen's go ahead goal came off of an early penatly kick in the first half. A Bard defenseman was issued a red card for a hand ball in the 18-yard box, warranting a penaty kick to Union. The forward easily drove one past senior goalkeeper Devon Connelly, taking the lead 1-0.
From the beginning of the match, the Dutchmen's offense took control, flooding Bard's zone with a total of 28 shots. Sophomore
Nick Vozzella and senior
Kevan Benn took the reins for Union, taking back to back shots to force the hand ball that led to the penalty kick. Connelly was on his game, though, taking opportunities away from the Dutchmen by snagging the ball several times before there were any chances for a shot.
Bard senior Jonah Peterschild had one of the best opportunities for the Raptors, dribbling down the center in front of Union goalkeeper
Mike Szczesniak. However, senior Szczesniak was perfect in net Saturday with help from senior
Tom Albano and junior
Chris Choquette, who played great defensive games.
The Dutchmen took their lead to 2-0 when Benn and Jansen made a gorgeous play to senior
Marc Zeyak in front of Connelly. With text book execution, Zeyak buried his shot on the left side of the net after a pass in front from Benn. It was Zeyak's ninth goal of the season.
At the beginning of the second half, Zeyak would return the favor to Benn, somehow routing him the ball amidst a pile up in front of Connelly. At the 47:54 mark, Benn took the Dutchmen to 3-0 with a shot from 18 feet back. Less than five minutes later, Jansen would find Albano 10 feet in front of the net. The senior fired a shot that went top shelf above Connelly. Both Benn and Albano's goals were their season's first.
Union's offense refused to quit working, continuing to overpower Bard's defense. In his first game of the season, and only a few minutes into playing time, senior
Teddy Steen would earn his first goal of the season to take the Dutchmen up 5-0. Steen's score originated off of a corner kick taken by senior
Tim Pryor.
The Dutchmen's final goal would come from Vozzella. After receiving a feed from sophomore
Dean Constant, Vozzella easily dribbled the ball in and put the shot past the goalkeeper. It was the junior's fifth of the season, taking him to 15 points.
Union is back in action at St. Lawrence on Friday, October 14th, at 4:00 p.m. for another Liberty League match. They will also stay on the road against Clarkson on October 15th at 2:00 p.m.
