SCHENECTADY, NY -- Rusmir Dzanko scored a career high 20 points and
Keith Callies also scored 20 as the Union College men's basketball team defeated Southern Vermont, 100-59 at the Viniar Athletic Center Thursday night. The Dutchmen are 4-1 and winners of four straight while the Mountaineers fell to 0-8.
It was the first time that Union hit the century mark since a 110-108 overtime win at Hobart on January 24, 2009. The last time the Dutchmen did it at home and also accomplished the feat in regulation was on January 6, 2006, a 106-62 win over St. Joseph's of New York.
Dzanko made nine of his 11 shots and Callies made eight of his 11.
Joe Mason recorded his first double double with 14 points and a career best 10 rebounds, and just missed the triple with seven assists.
Keven Donohue added 16 points and
Brian DeBisschop scored 10 in 11 minutes off the bench for the Dutchmen.
Taeshon Johnson led the Mountaineers with a game best 27 points and Jordan Santiago scored 18. Johnson led the visitors with eight rebounds.
Union shot 53% for the game and held Southern Vermont to 31% shooting. Union also had a 52-37 rebounding advantage.
The Dutchmen never trailed and the last tie was 4-4 just 2:04 into the game. Union went on a 27-8 run over the next 9:47 for a 31-12 lead with just over eight minutes left in the half and took a 26 point lead into the locker room (49-23).
The largest lead of the second half was 50 after a DeBisschop layup with 7:15 remaining made it 89-39. A second free throw by Avi Adler-Cohen gave Union the 100th point with 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Union is idle until December 13 when the Dutchmen play at Utica.
