SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior guard Gerard O'Shea scored 16 points and senior guard Jeff Altimar tallied 14 to lead Skidmore College to a 73-67 men's basketball win over host Union College at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night. Skidmore is now 6-2 in the league and 12-7 overall, while the Dutchmen fell to 9-10 and 1-7 in the league.
Brian Lowry tallied 12 points and John Mantas had 11 for the Thoroughbreds, who shot 45% and only turned the ball over six times, three in each half. Kyle Clark had a team high six rebounds.
Union's Matt Covucci just missed a triple double with 14 rebounds, 13 points and a career high eight assists. It was his third double double of the season. Drew Goldstein scored 20 points, giving him 50 in two games. He made seven of nine from the line. Keven Donohue scored 18 points and The Dutchmen outrebounded the Thoroughbreds, 34-33, and shot 45% for the game.
Union took a two point lead into the half, 35-33. The game featured the 10th tie of the game, 52-52, with 9:10 remaining in the second half. Skidmore outscored the Dutchmen, 15-9 in the next 5:08 for a 67-61 featuring three pointers by Mathas and Lowry. Union got to within four with 28 seconds left on a Covucci layup to make it 69-65, but Union's four fouls down the stretch helped lead to a perfect 4 for 4 Skidmore performance at the line en route to the win.
Union continues a homestand with an 8 p.m. game Friday night vs. Hobart.
