TROY, NY -- Junior Sarah Wetmore netted a game-high 23 points to lead the Rensselaer women's basketball team to a come-from-behind, 55-52, victory over Union, at East Campus Arena. With the win, the Engineers improve to 10-12 overall and 6-5 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchwomen fall to 13-7 and 8-4 in the league.
Despite the loss, Union remained in first and is now in a three way tie with St. Lawrence and William Smith. St. Lawrence lost to the Herons Saturday.
Wetmore hit 7 of 15 shots from the field and 9 of 11 free throws, while recording six rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. Linda Larsen added nine points, two assists and a game-best eight steals, while juniors Hillary McKinley and Nicole Monroe each had eight points.
Leah Pepe led Union with 15 points while Brittney Kenney scored 10 and Lauren McCormick pulled down 14 rebounds.
Union jumped to an early lead as a three-pointer by Union's Shayla Madden gave the visitors an 18-6 advantage midway (10:26) through the first half. Wetmore then led the Engineers back to within two (24-22) thanks to a jump shot a pair of free throws.
A lay-up by Leah Pepe put the Dutchwomen up 28-22 at the break.
Rensselaer took its first lead of the game with 10:39 to play in the second after McKinley buried two from the line. After the Dutch came back to tie it at 42-all, RPI junior Laura Easterling drilled a step-back three-pointer to put the hosts back on top (45-42). Larsen gave the Engineers their largest lead of seven points (54-47) with 1:37 to play, and RPI was able to hold on, as a last second three-point attempt by Madden caromed off the back rim and out.
The Dutchwomen will close out the regular season with two home games next week. Friday Union will host Clarkson at 6 p.m. and Senior Day will be Saturday at 2 p.m. against St. Lawrence in what could be a showdown for the Liberty League regular season title.
