SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior forward Pat Sullivan scored 22 points with seven rebounds and Ephraim McDowell scored 16 points for Hamilton College in an 80-71 Liberty League men's basketball victory over Union College at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday. The Continentals now stand 12-6 overall and 6-3 in the league while the Dutchmen fell to 9-12 and 1-9 in league play.
Matt Dean scored nine points and Ken Click, Ryan Wright and Hans Schulte each added eight for Hamilton, which shot 47% and outrebounded the hosts, 32-25. Hamilton turned the ball over just five times for the entire game.
Union was led by
Keven Donohue's 23 points and eight boards. It was his 15th double figure scoring game. He made eight of 14 shots and all four free throws while also dishing out five assists.
Rusmir Dzanko and
Evan Croll scored 14 points, with Croll setting a new career scoring high in his sophomore season.
Matt Covucci added 10 points anf four assists and
Drew Goldstein also had four assists. Union shot 55% from the floor the game and had just nine turnovers.
The Dutchmen were hot in the first half with a 10 points lead, 32-22 with 4:40 to go. But the Continentals went on a 12-2 run to tie it at 34-34 with 43 seconds left and led 36-34 at the half. In the second half, Hamilton took a 54-47 lead with 12:25 left on two free throws by Greg Newton. But Union came back with a 13-5 run in the next 5:55 for a 60-59 lead after a layup by Donohue. But three pointers by Sullivan and Dean made it a six point lead with 4:06 left for Hamilton. Union got within four at 69-65 with 2:14 left on a
Matt Petrone free throw, but the Continentals made eight straight free throws to seal the 80-71 win.
Union, which completed a five game home stand, is at Vassar Friday (Feb. 11) and at RPI Saturday (Feb. 12).
