Dianni scores in final second of overtime in 8-7 win over #13 Williams

SCHENECTADY, NY --
Senior attack Casey Dianni scored with one second left in overtime to give the Union College women's lacrosse team an 8-7 victory over #13 Williams at Frank Bailey Field Tuesday night. The Dutchwomen improved to 2-3 after their home opening win, while the Ephs fell to 4-3.

Dianni broke in alone and scored just before time ran out, capping a wild game that was sent to the extra session due to two Williams goals in the final 5:06 of overtime.

Kristin Joyce scored three goals and assisted on two ohers for the Dutchwomen, while fellow senior Chelsea Charette tallied twice. Joyce had 10 shots and Heather Fraser had eight ground balls and four caused turnovers. Union got single goals by Melissa Hine and Heather Fraser along with Dianni's. Alexis Deeb made eight saves in her 66 minutes of work.

Becca McGovern led Williams with three goals, while Emily Whicker, Nicolle Perry, Katie Pettengill and Emily Jablonski each scored. Perry had seven ground balls and Julia Schreiber retreived six. Schreiber made nine saves in the Williams net.

Union had a 3-2 lead after the first half. Perry made it 6-3 at 25:57 but the Dutchwomen scored three straight, and Charette's ninth of the season with 20:17 left in the second half made it 6-3 Union. Jablonski and McGovern pulled the Ephs closer at 6-5, with McGovern's coming with 17:16 left. Joyce got it back up to a two goal lead at 7-5 with her 16th of the young season with 9:45 left. But McGovern's fourth at 5:06 and Whicker's 11th with 3:28 left tied it by the end of regulation.

Union had a 31-18 shot advantage and 35-31 ground ball advantage. The Ephs were one for three on free positions and the Dutchwomen converted two of eight.

Union is at Vassar Friday at 4 p.m. to open Liberty League play and is at RPI Saturday at 1 p.m. Williams hosts Trinity in a NESCAC contest Saturday at 12 p.m.
