WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Junior attack
Ted McKenna scored three goals, all in the first quarter and freshman attack
Rob Santangelo added five points (two goals, three assists) to lead Union (7-2) to a 10-7 win at Williams. Junior goaltender
Sean Aaron made a season high 20 saves to preserve the win for Union. For the Dutchmen, it was their fourth win in a row, and their first win at Williams in over 40 years.
Union got off to a great start in the first quarter, as McKenna took a pass from Santangelo, stepped just above Goal Line Extended (GLE), and slid a shot under the cross bar. McKenna scored the second goal for the Dutchmen as well, using a screen to set up an inside spin that put him at point blank range.
The Ephs got on the scoreboard with a goal from midfielder Ryan Prokesch to cut the Union lead to 2-1.
A Williams penalty set up an extra-man opportunity for Union with little time remaining in the first quarter. The Dutchmen capitalized on the chance as McKenna netted his third goal of the game.
Though Ben Bourke tallied the first goal of the second quarter for Williams, the Ephs were not able to get into an offensive rhythm. Bourke scored after he scooped up a loose ball on the crease and fired a low left-handed shot past junior goaltender
Sean Aaron, closing the deficit to 3-2. The Dutchmen held Williams to only three additional shots in the quarter.
Union took control of the game on both sides of the ball. Santangelo recorded his second and third assists of the day to spur a three-goal run in the final five minutes of the half.
Santangelo added another goal at the start of the third quarter, sliding a shot past Williams goaltender Henry Mills as he was falling down. With the margin at 7-2, the Ephs scored two straight goals to get back into the game
Will Stewart got things started for the Ephs, scoring during an extra-man opportunity. Williams' Steve Upton then forced a turnover and found Mike Ryan for a man-down goal.
Union responded with a crushing blow. With time disappearing off the clock in the third quarter, Union transitioned effectively from defense to offense catching the Ephs off-guard with quick ball movement. McKenna found senior attack
Brendan Kinnane for the goal that put the Dutchmen ahead 8-4 heading into the final quarter.
Santangelo scored early in the fourth quarter to give Union a 9-4 lead before Williams' Corey Jacobs scored on an impressive individual run.
Derek Mayer scored for Union to give Union a 10-5 lead before Williams' Sam Hargrove and Bourke added goals in the final five minutes of the game.
The Ephs outshot Union 13-4 in the fourth quarter and forced seven Dutchmen turnovers, but the rally was not enough as Union prevailed 10-7. Goalie
Sean Aaron certainly deserves credit for preserving the win as he ended the game with 20 saves while allowing 7 goals. Henry Mills, in his first start for the Ephs, had ten saves and gave up ten goals.
Union will return to Liberty League play to take on No. 12 Skidmore in Saratoga on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
