TROY, N.Y. – In a hard fought battle that included nine lead changes, the Union women's lacrosse team edged Rensselaer, 10-8, in Liberty League action on Saturday, April 2. With the win, the Dutchwomen improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Engineers fall to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Senior Melissa Hine began the scoring just 58 seconds into the first half, putting Union on the board with an unassisted goal. RPI responded with goals from seniors Afton Marshall and Stephanie Caouette, giving the Engineers a one-goal lead.
Hine evened the score at 2-2 with another unassisted tally at 22:00, but Caouette put RPI on top once again just 2:08 later, collecting a quick pass from rookie Meg Colitz and firing it past Union goaltender Alexis Deeb.
The lead would flip-flop four more times before the end of the half, with neither team managing more than a one-goal advantage. With under six minutes remaining, the Dutchwomen got a pair of goals from sophomore Brittany Fraser and senior Casey Dianni to take a 6-5 lead into halftime.
Rensselaer took an 8-7 lead in the second half on a goal from senior Jen Greenwood, but Union seniors Kristin Joyce, Chelsea Charette, and Hine all stepped up, scoring three unanswered goals to seal the victory.
Hine led all scorers with four goals and she scooped up three ground balls on the afternoon. Marshall had three goals and an assist for RPI, while sophomore Shannon Maguire netted two goals.
Deeb needed to make just three saves to seal the win for the Dutchwomen in net, while sophomore Allie Arnal stopped six shots for the Engineers.
Union will play Skidmore at home in a league game at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, April 5.
