Joyce breaks Union career scoring record in 8-7 loss at St. Lawrence

Union College senior attack Kristin Joyce became the all-time career women's lacrosse goal leader in the Dutchwomen's 8-7 Liberty League loss at St. Lawrence Friday. the Dutchwomen fell to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the league while the Saints improved to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Joyce needed just one goal to break the record of 217 she had tied earlier this week at home. She shared the honor with Molly Flanagan '05. With 21:06 remaining in the first half, Joyce scored an unassisted goal to give her the new record. She also scored two other goals and added an assist while posting 10 shots and five ground balls.

Brigid Hurley led the Saints with foru goals while Kim Morse added two. Anna Marchand made 12 saves for the hosts, while Alexis Deeb stopped nine for the Dutchwomen.

Union had a 30-20 shot advantage, and outshot the Saints, 21-4 in the second half. St. Lawrence had a 21-20 ground ball lead and both teams had 15 turnovers.

Union's Abby Stohler and Hurley had it at 1-1 7:16 into the game, then Joyce broke the tie with her record breaker. But Hurley scored the next two for a 3-2 lead by the 14:24 mark. Chelsea Charette evened it for Union on a Joyoce assist with 14:37 left in the half. But the Saints got goals by Stephanie O'Rourke, Kim Morse and Kim Cooper in the final 6:37 for a 6-3 lead at the half.

Joyce scored with 27:47 left after a feed from Brittany Fraser. But Morse and Hurley had the Saints up 8-4 with 21:14 left. Union came storming back but ran out of time. Fraser tallied with17:47 left, Joyce notched her 27th of the season with 14:41 left and Michaela Desimone made it a one goal game with just 46 seconds to play.

The Dutchwomen play at Clarkson Saturday.
