NORTH ADAMS, MA- The Union College Men's Soccer team captured the 2011 CIAO Classic title with an unblemished mark of 2-0. The Dutchmen outscored their opponents 20-1 over the two game span. Husson University was named tournament runner up following a 1-0 win over host MCLA. Junior Sebastiaan Jansen was named the offensive MVP.
The Dutchmen used an explosive spurt over the final 25 minutes of the opening half en route to a convincing 14-0 win over Medgar Evers. Senior Marc Zeyak netted a first half hat trick to lead Union, while CIAO MVP Jansen collected his second straight hat trick.
Jansen notched his fourth goal of the tournament to kick off the first half barrage in the 20th minute. Six minutes later, junior Chris Choquette took a Jansen throw and pounded it past Medgar Evers keeper Christopher Welsh. Zeyak then scored the first of his three goals in the period at the 31:09 mark. Junior Sahr Nyuma blasted home a shot from close range, while Zeyak added two more in the closing minutes of the half.
The Dutchmen wasted little time in adding to their lead when Jansen tallied twice in the opening minutes of the second period. Nine different Union players notched markers on the afternoon, including one from senior Scott Reddy and two from sophomore Dean Constant. Freshmen Thomas Murtagh, Daniel Miller and Benjamin Golub all recorded their first career goals.
Union outshot Medgar Evers 38-7 on the afternoon. With the win, Union moved to 5-0 and captured the CIAO Classic title. Medgar Evers drops to 0-4 on the season. Next up, The Dutchmen take on SUNY New Paltz Saturday, September 17, at 1 p.m.
