SCHENECTADY, NY – Freshmen Whitney Bickford and Mollie Gilchrist both scored in the second half to lead No. 15 Union (5-0) to a 2-1 win over No. 8 Rochester (5-1) at College Park.
Gilchrist eluded the Rochester defense for a game-winning header at 57:55 off a corner kick from junior forward Jennifer Mansfield, who had two assists in the contest. For Gilchrist, it was her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Bickford had tied the score just over four minutes earlier in the half at 53:53, corralling a loose ball in the 18-yard box off a corner kick and beating Rochester goaltender Bridget Lang with a low shot into the side netting.
The Yellow Jackets turned up the pressure late in the second half, earning two corner kicks in the final seven minutes. But Union goalkeeper Mia Simone and the defense were up to the task, helping the Dutchwomen earn the come-from-behind win in their home opener.
Rochester scored the game's first goal at the 26:13 mark of teh first half off a corner kick. Grace Van der Ven fired a corner kick into the box that deflected right to Kathryn Rowe. Rowe fired a low shot past Mia Simone on the short side to put the Yellow Jackets up 1-0 heading into the half.
For the game, the Dutchwomen outshot Rochester 13-7, including a 3-0 shot advantage in the second half. Simone made two saves on the afternoon for Union, while Bridget Lang stopped five shots for Rochester. The Yellow Jackets held a 7-6 advantage on corner kicks.
Union will take on SUNY Fredonia at 1:00 pm on Sunday at College Park.
