Vassar pulls out 2-1 OT win over Union in field hockey league opener

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- Sophomore midfielder Cameron Felt scored two goals, her second coming 11 minutes into overtime, to lead the Vassar College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Union College in Liberty League action Friday night at a rain soaked Weinberg Field.

For a second straight year, Vassar and Union were deadlocked in a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation. While last year's contest was played under sunny skies and was decided by penalty strokes, Friday afternoon's game was played under a steady and heavy rain, and was decided by a Felt goal that was initiated by senior forward Katy Hwang. Hwang's deflected shot by a Union defender ricocheted in the air and was collected by Felt who took the mid-air ball and swiped it past Union sophomore goalie Mary McCune for the winning tally.

Vassar improves to 4-3, 1-0 and will continue Liberty League play at Rensselaer on September 28 at 4:30 p.m. Union drops to 0-5, 0-1 and travels to Rensselaer for a 2:00 p.m. game tomorrow.

Felt's first goal at the 46:31 mark of the second half was a result of heavy action in front of the Union goal following a penalty corner. Vassar freshman midfielder Dara Davis took advantage of a downed McCune following a Brewer shot, and alertly fed an aware Felt who flicked the ball into the unprotected goal for a 1-0 Vassar lead. The Brewers led in penalty corners 14-10.

Union, which was outshot by Vassar 20-11, took advantage of its golden opportunity in the game's 56th minute when sophomore forward Nicole Merigliano took a feed from senior forward Isabel Zellweger and launched a hard shot over the left shoulder of Vassar sophomore goalie Magie Brelis to tie the game 1-1. Brelis made two key saves in overtime and five in the contest. She made a clutch save off a Merigliano's shot midway through overtime.

McCune made five saves in the contest, one coming off a penalty shot from Vassar's Hwang in the game's 32nd minute. Just one minute into overtime, and with the Brewers making a rush toward goal, Union's senior Natalie Engel made a big defensive save off a shot by Vassar senior midfielder Maura McCarthy that kept the Brewers from winning the contest early in overtime.
