SCHENECTADY, NY -- Cydni Matsuoka posted a double double with game highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds and also dished out eight assists to lead Vassar College to a 61-58 win over Union College in a Liberty League women's basketball game at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The Brewers improved to 1-1 in the league and 7-3 overall while the Dutchwomen fell to 0-2 and 4-6.
Colleen O'Connell had nine points and seven rebounds and Kristyn Tempora and Parks added eight points each for Vassar. Matsuoka made a layup with 53 seconds left for a 59-58 lead and had a key steal late while also making two free throws with one second remaining to seal the victory. Vassar shot 40% and outrebounded the Dutchwomen, 45-43.
Union was led by
Brittney Kenney's 15 points and she joined
Rachel Beaulac with a team high eight boards.
Meghan Erdman scored 11 points for the Dutchwomen, who forced 23 turnovers and shot 31% for the game.
Vassar had a 26-25 lead at the half, and but the second half featured 10 lead changes. The visitors were up by five at 34-29 at 16:09 on a jumper by Brittany Parks. But Union came back on a jumper by
Marissa Peck for a run of 13-7 for a 42-41 lead with 11:41 left. The eighth tie of the half was on a three pointer by Matsuoka for a 55-55 score with 3:56 left in regulation. Beaulac made a free throw but missed the second at 3:06, then Tempora hit a jumper at 2:44 for a 57-56 Vassar lead. Union followed with a Kenney layup at 2:17 for a 58-57 lead, but it was the last lead for Union for the game, as Matsuoka gave Vassar the lead for good with her layup with the 53 ticks left to play.
Union has a busy three game league week coming up, with games at Hobart Tuesday and at RPI Friday followed by a home game on January 14 against Liberty League newcomer Bard at 2 p.m.
