Box Score

CANTON, NY -
Senior forward Jennifer Mansfield's goal in the 83rd minute helped No. 13 Union College earn a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday in a Liberty League contest at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Dutchwomen improved to 12-1 overall on the season and 4-1-0 in the league standings.  Meanwhile, the Saints fall to 6-5-2 and 1-4-1.

Union poured on the offensive pressure in the second half after being outshot by the home team 8-5 in the opening half.

Sophomore forward Mollie Gilchrist cashed in on a goal three minutes into the second stanza for her seventh of the season. Junior forward Melissa Mansfield sent a cross to the opposite field where Gilchrist had an open look and put the ball past St. Lawrence goalkeeper Kelsey West for the 1-0 lead.

St. Lawrence evened the score at 1-1 in the 64th minute when Stephanie Sayward scored her eighth goal of the season. Classmate and fellow captain Brooke Hessney fed the ball through to her on the left side. Sayward took a Union defender towards the endline, cut the ball back to her right foot and struck a beautiful shot inside the far right post past senior goalkeeper Kayla Marti.

Mansfield scored the game-winner with seven minutes left in regulation.  Junior midfielder Kelsey Fish stole the ball from a St. Lawrence defender looking to clear it out of the 18 yard box, and dished a pass to Mansfield who put a shot in the upper right corner of the net to give her team the 2-1 victory on the road.

St. Lawrence and Union both had several good chances to score throughout the game, including shots that ricocheted off the crossbar for both teams.  Marti finished with eight saves for the Dutchwomen, while West finished with seven saves for the Saints.  Union held slight advantages in shots (15-13) and corner kicks (9-7) when the final whistle blew.

Union will travel to Troy, NY for a night game against Renssealer on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
