SCHENECTADY, NY -- Kealy Chipman and Shawna Pinsonault highlighted a three goal second half with a goal and an assist each to lead Castleton State to a 3-1 non-league field hockey victory at Union College's Frank Bailey Field Wednesday. The Spartans improved to 13-2 on the year while the Dutchwomen, who entered with four wins in the last five games, fell to 6-8 and had a three game winning streak halted.
The Spartans outshot the Dutchwomen, 19-11, and Union had a nine to seven advantage in corners. Jessica Glatioto made six saves in her 13th victory for Castleton and
Molly McCune, this week's Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week, stopped eight.
Union opened the scoring at 15:29, when
Emily Finneran notched her third of the season.
Ali Flake set her up in front straight on for the 1-0 lead. The Dutchwomen held the 1-0 advantage at halftime.
Castleton came out strong in the second half and scored two gaols with four minutes and a total of three tallies in under five minutes. Kristy Pinkham shot from 10 yards out through a crowd to put the Spartans on the board at 35:55, and Chipman earned the assist. Chipman then scored her team high 20th of the season just 3:24 later, taking a pass from Pinsonault on the right of the net and scoring inside 10 yards out. Then at 40:02, after Rachel Preusser rushed down to close in on the right side of the cage, she fed Pinsonault who tucked in her fourth of the fall for the 3-1 lead.
Union plays at Wheaton Sunday at 2 p.m. in a non-league contest. After a game on October 26 at Oneonta, Union closes out at home with a 2 p.m. game vs. Vassar.
