SCHENECTADY, NY – Union falls at home to Williams College 1-3 (25-21, 25-27, 16-25, 19-25) at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday evening.
The Dutchwomen and Ephs were even early in the first set at seven a piece. Union created some separation as the Dutchwomen sparked a 4-0 run highlighted by
Mackenzie Westfall's backwards pass to
Nora Wood. After an Ephs timeout, the Dutchwomen continued their run adding three more. After exchanging the next few points, Williams were able to narrow the deficit to two with a Katherine Lane kill.
Lauren Woods started to rebuild the Union lead as the Dutchwomen led 19-16. Williams responded immediately with a pair of points to narrow the score to one. Woods and
Kelley White were able to carry Union to finish the first set 25-21.
Williams opened the second set building a 7-3 lead highlighted by a service ace from Emily Doll. Ryan Farley and the Ephs kept the Dutchwomen at bay with great defense. Union took their first timeout as Williams led 11-6 in the second set.
Rajpreet Dhaliwal stringed together a pair of kills as part of a Union 6-1 run to even the score at 12. After an Ephs timeout, each team remained close as the Dutchwomen clung to a 17-16 lead. After exchanging the next few points, Emily Baratta managed to level the score at 20. Neither team gave way, as it was all even at 25. After a White kill, Lane responded with one of her own to make it 26 all. Raea Rasmussen blocked a Wood attack to lead Williams to a second set win 27-25.
Baratta got the Ephs off to a quick 3-0 start in the third set with two service aces. Williams padded their lead as the Ephs built a 10-4 lead. Union took their third time out but it did not slow down the Williams attack. Catherine Egan struck down two kills to extend the Ephs lead to nine at 16-7. William's continued their attack as the Dutchwomen took a second timeout trialing 11-20. Union was able to close the deficit to seven but the Ephs closed out the third set 25-16.
Union trailed in the fourth set as the Ephs built a 9-4 lead. Farley and Egan fended off the Dutchwomen attack as Union took a timeout and trailed 7-14. The Dutchwomen quickly narrowed a once seven-point lead to three at 15-12. However, Williams was able to rebuild their seven-point lead at 20-13. After a Union timeout, the Dutchwomen went on a 6-0 to narrow the Ephs lead to one. Williams however pulled away in the final moments to take the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
Lane and Baratta paced the Ephs with 12 kills each. Rasmussen made five blocks in the win while Farley orchestrated the Williams' attack with a game-high 49 assists.
Union was led by Westfall with 38 assists while
Marissa Vollmer had 22 digs.
Rachel Wyman led the Dutchwomen with 18 kills while Dhaliwal, Wood and White each had seven kills in the loss.
The Dutchwomen will be the host team, as the Dutchwomen will prepare to play Oneonta State, Lehman, Potsdam and Keene State in the Interleague Challenge beginning on Friday, October 5 at 4:00 p.m.
