Mansfield's OT goal lifts No. 25 women's soccer to 2-1 win over Vassar


SCHENECTADY, NY –  Senior forward Jennifer Mansfield scored in the 95th minute to lift No. 25 Union College women's soccer (14-2, 6-2 Liberty League) to a 2-1 OT win over Vassar (9-7, 3-5 Liberty League) on Senior Day at College Park.

Mansfield notched her team-leading 10th goal of the season, taking a pass from Mollie Gilchrist and beating Vassar goalie Ali Higgins (12 saves) just over four minutes into the extra frame to give the Dutchwomen the victory.

Union trailed 1-0 late in the second half, but sophomore midfielder Whitney Bickford struck on a set piece in the 78th minute to tie the game. From 25 yards out, Bickford hit a curling shot into the upper left corner of the net at 77:09 to even the game at 1-1.

Higgins was stellar early on in the contest, keeping the game scoreless with a great save in the fourth minute on a Jennifer Mansfield shot from 15 yards out.

Vassar got on the scoreboard late in the half, as Lucy Brainerd sent a cross from the left side that hit off the crossbar, but landed right at the feed of Kamarla Coley.

Coley beat Union goalkeeper Kayla Marti (four saves) at 43:07 to give Vassar a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Union came out with renewed energy in the second half, as Jennifer Mansfield hit the crossbar in the 68th and 75th minutes with the Dutchwomen building momentum towards their first goal of the contest by Bickford.  

Just minutes after Bickford's goal, Marti made an excellent save on a breakaway by Vassar's Chloe Wheeler in the 83rd minute, keeping the game tied at the end of regulation.

For the game, Union held a 14-5 edge on shots and an 8-0 advantage on corner kicks.

Union has earned the No. 4 seed in the Liberty League Tournament and will travel to No. 1 seed RPI on Wednesday.
