POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The men's soccer team was defeated in the semifinal match of the Liberty League tournament as
Dean Constant scored the lone goal in a 3-1 defeat against Vassar.
Vassar took advantage of their first goal scoring opportunity as Tom Weichart rifled a shot to the left of
Ryan Carter. The netminder made the save initially but could not contain the rebound as Jordan Palmer put away the loose ball to put the Brewers up 1-0 in the third minute. The Brewers had another opportunity 10 minutes later as Dante Varotsis found the ball inside the 18 but
Will Poetzsch was there to block the shot.
The Dutchmen got their first of the game, as
Nick Vozzella was able to set-up
Daniel Miller 20 yards out from the left side but the midfielder shot the ball wide of netminder Ryan Grimme. On the counterattack, Weichert was able to get a header off but Carter was there to tip the ball out of harms way.
Union's offense began to gain momentum midway through the first half as
Sebastiaan Jansen freed himself inside the penalty box after a cross from
Jake Soodek. However, the striker could not guide the header on target as it sailed to right.
Vassar countered with numbers as Dante Varostis sent a dangerous cross through the middle. However, Carter dove to prevent the cross from finding any attacking Brewers in the middle. Weichert got another chance on the Dutchmen defense as the striker found himself in an odd-man rush with Rob Manukyan. The forwards were able to get around the outnumbered defense, as Weichert was able to slip a shot under Carter in the middle of the box to put the Brewers up by two in the 33
rd minute.
The Dutchmen were able to get their first shot on goal as Benjamin Goulb sent a streaking
Dean Constant, as he was able to drive a low shot to the right side of Grimme to score in the 41
st minute. Vassar tried to recapture the two-goal lead as Juliano Pereira redirected a cross with a header but the attempt sailed over the net as time expired.
After a quiet 10 minutes to open the second half, Varostis found himself one-on-one with Carter on the left side of the box. However, the striker's shot was high off the mark. Pereira also had an opportunity just three minutes later but his bid was high as well.
Jansen and the Dutchmen were able to counter moments later as Vozzella drove the ball to the goal line on the right side and sent a floating cross. Despite his efforts, the striker could not find the mark. Vozzella had an opportunity of his own later on; as he blasted a nearside shot but sailed to the right of the net.
The Brewers recaptured their two-goal cushion as Evan Seltzer drove the ball to the left side and lofted a ball into the box. Weichert was unmarked as he volleyed the ball by Carter to score his second of the game. Jansen and Vozzella tried to respond to the goal as each player had opportunities but the ball could not find the net.
There was some hope for the Dutchmen as Vassar's Nick Hess was ejected from the game on a second yellow card in the 81
st minute. However, the Dutchmen defense could not generate another goal as Vassar held for the 3-1 win to advance to the Liberty League final.
Ryan Grimme was credited with three saves and the win and improves to 10-2-2 while Carter drops to 12-5, stopping nine saves. Vassar outshot the Dutchmen 27-18 but conceded more corners 5-4.
