ORONO, Maine – Nicole Bartlett scores the game-winning goal as the Dutchwomen prevail in a 4-3 win over Maine Friday night.
Union (4-9-3, 0-5-3 ECAC) was able to open up the scoring in the first period as
Kathryn Tomaselli dished a pass to
Rebecca Babiak in which she scored her first collegiate goal.
However, Maine (2-13-1, 1-8-0) was able to draw two penalties in the latter half of the first period as
Alex Tancrell-Fontaine and
Maddy Norton served penalties. The Dutchwomen were able to kill the first penalty but Jennifer More was able to level the score with 1:19 remaining in the first period.
Maine continued to develop chances in the second period, as the Black Bears were able to draw two more penalties in the second period.
Shenae Lundberg and the Dutchwomen defense were able to endure the Black Bears offense and eliminate both power plays in the period. Despite that, the Black Bears were able to build their lead to two with a goal by Tori Pasquariello with the assists credited to More and Brittney Huneke.
The Dutchwomen offense rallied back as Union was able to go on the man-advantage after a tripping call by Megan Menotti.
Courtney Turner was able to net her fourth goal of the season on the power play as she was set up by
Stefanie Thomson and Alex-Tancrell Fontaine to level the score at two. Moments later,
Christine Valente and Turner were able to set up
Jessica Kaminsky for her third goal of the season to put Union up 3-2 with 15:04 remaining in the third.
Union continued to sustain penalties as the Dutchwomen served a season-high 16 minutes in the penalty box. Maine once again was on the power play but the Dutchwomen kept Maine to just 1-6 on the man-advantage. The Maine attack eventually broke through as Kelsey MacSorely and More set up Huneke with the third Maine goal of the evening.
After another penalty kill for Union,
Emma Rambo and Babiak were able to set up
Nicole Bartlett with the go-ahead goal at 4-3 with 2:30 remaining in the period. Maine opted for the extra skater moments later but the Dutchwomen defense was able to hold on for the 4-3 win.
Lundberg tallied 40 saves to earn the win and improve to 3-6-3 while Brittany Ott made 12 saves and was given the loss to drop to 2-8-1.
Each team netted one goal on the power play with the Black Bears going 1-6 and the Dutchwomen going 1-4. Maine outshot Union 40-19 in the match.
Union's win is the second time that the Dutchwomen have defeated Maine in which the last win dates back to January 11, 2009. Additionally, the Dutchwomen have tied their win total of last season (4).
The Dutchwomen will be playing the Black Bears again tomorrow, December 15 at Alfond Ice Arena beginning at 2:00 p.m.
