Kate Thompson recorded career highs with 32 points and 16 rebounds and junior guard
Amy Loya had a career best 15 rebounds to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a 74-69 non-league victory over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Tuesday night at the Viniar Athletic Center. Both teams stand 3-3 after this contest.
Thompson became the first Dutchwoman to score 30 or more points since Michelle Rogers tallied 38 points in an 82-73 home win over Williams on November 30, 2008. Thompson made 16 of her 24 shots. Loya had 11 of her rebounds on the defensive end. Kesley McDonald dished out a career best eight assists and
Brittney Kenney added seven rebounds with her 11 points and five assists. The Dutchwomen had a commanding 53-30 rebounding advantage. Union shot 43% and held the Trailblazers to 33% shooting.
Four players scored in double figures for MCLA. Lucy Trembley scored 25 points with seven boards and made seven of her eight free throws. Danielle Beauchamp had 16 points, Kait Chenevert 13 with four assists and Danielle Scolpino 11.
Union had a 39-29 lead at halftime. The Dutchwomen were up by as much as 15 at 49-34 when
Kate Thompson made her fifth layup of the young second half, with 16:27 left in the second. But the Trailblazers went on a 14-5 run over the next 5:19 featuring three pointesrs by Scolpino and Beauchamp. MCLA got to within two with 3:20 to play on a free throw by Scolpino. With 1:51 left a three pointer by Trembley made it a one point contest at 67-66. But Thompson's layup with 59 left made it a 69-66 lead, and the Dutchwomen made five free throws in the final 33 seconds to wrap up the victory.
The Dutchwomen outscored the Trailblazers, 40-18 in the paint, including 22-8 in the first half.
Union opens Liberty League play on the road later this week. The Dutchwomen are at RIT Friday night at 6 p.m. then play at William Smith Saturday at 3 p.m.
