SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Shayla Madden and
Kate Thompson scored 14 points each as the Union women's basketball team qualified for the post season in a must win situation. The Dutchwomen defeated host Skidmore, 60-53 Saturday at the Williamson Center. Union, which trailed by 11 points in the second half, needed the win and also a Vassar win over William Smith, and the Brewers won 70-55.
The Dutchwomen are the #4 seed in the Liberty League Playoffs and will play at #1 St. Lawrence at either 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. Wednesday night.
Brittney Kenney added 13 points and nine rebounds and Madden had eight boards for the Dutchwomen, who shot 40% and had a 37-36 rebounding edge. Union is 13-11 and finished the regular season 9-7 in the league.
Megan Gaugler scored 13 points and had nine rebounds for Skidmore, which was eliminated and finishes at 15-10 overall and 8-8 in the league. Christina Gargiso scored 11 points with eight rebounds for the Thoroughbreds, who shot 31%.
Union trailed 27-26 at halftime. A 17-7 Skidmore run in 7:31 gave the hosts an 11 point lead at 44-33 with 12:29 left in the second half. But Union came all the way back and took a 50-49 lead with 4:32 left on a
Kristin Schmidt layup. After a Gargino jumper made it 51-50 Skidmore at 3:58, Union took over with a 7-0 run for a 58-51 lead with 43 seconds left led by four points and a key rebound by Thompson.
St. Lawrence was a perfect 16-0 in league play, and won 69-54 at Union this season. But the Dutchwomen lost just 68-66 in Canton.
