Three pointer in the final second gives Hobart 62-60 win over Dutchmen


SCHENECTADY, NY -- Greg Stern's three pointer with 0.1 left on the clock lifted the Hobart College men's basketball team to a come from behind 62-60 win over host Union College at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night.

The Statesmen, Liberty League leaders with a record of 10-2, are 17-4 overall, while the Dutchmen had a five game winning streak snapped and fell to 7-6 in the league and 14-7 overall.

With the game tied at 59-59 with 20 seconds left, Terell Winney made both free throws for the Dutchmen. Union fouled with 11 seconds left and Stern nailed the game winner in front of his teammates on the bench to cap the comeback.

Matt Pebole had 17 points and Richie Bonney and Stefan Thompson 11 each while Bonney led the guests with eight rebounds. Hobart shot 44%, 57% in the second half. Union was led by Rusmir Dzanko's 17 points and Keven Donohue's 14, while Terell Winney had 10 and Joe Mason had seven rebounds with six assists. The Dutchmen shot 49% for the game and were outrebounded, 32-24.

Union jumped out to a 14 point first half lead at 22-8 with 8:37 left in the period. The Dutchmen took a 39-27 lead into the half. Donohue had 14 points in the first 20 minutes for Union, which shot 60% in the first half. Union led 45-32 with 16:47 to play, but the Statesmen took their first lead of the night when Pebole's layup made it 48-47 with 9:05 left. That capped a 16-2 run in a span of 7:42 and Bonney had six of those points. The Statesmen got up to a seven point lead at 55-48 with 6:38 left but the Dutchmen came back with four points by Dzanko for a 58-57 lead with 1:29 to play. Gibbons made a layup at 1:01 for the 59-58 lead before Winney stepped to the line with 20 ticks on the clock.

Union is idle this weekend, and will play at league newcomer RIT on Tuesday, February 14.
