SCHENECTADY, NY -- Freshman attack
Emily McGrail scored seven goals and the Union College women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 in Liberty League play with a 13-5 victory over Vassar College at Frank Bailey Field Saturday afternoon.
The Dutchwomen are 2-4 overall, the same record as the Brewers. Vassar is now 0-2 in league play.
McGrail, who now has 20 goals in her rookie season, had nine shots and five ground balls and was five for five in free position attempts.
Kat Egizi scored twice with an assist and Union got single scores from
Brittany Fraser,
Hilary Salander,
Heather Fraser and Troy Cameron.
Kim Grinhaus made four saves for Union.
Sophia Rosetti led the Brewers with two goals and Marissa Reilly, Cameron Felt and Dara Davis scored once each. Katherine Pula stopped nine Union shots.
The Dutchwomen outshot the Brewers, 25-11 and had a 23-13 ground ball advantage. Union converted eight of 10 free position opportunities while Vassar was five for 10, and the Dutchwomen forced 20 turnovers for the game.
Union led 2-0 after just 3:01 but Vassar tied it with 11:14 gone in the first on a goal by Felt. McGrail scored four straight, the final four goals of the half, for a 6-2 Union lead. Vassar scored twice in the first 2:29 of the second half to pull to within two at 6-4, but the Dutchwomen scored four straight and six of the next seven goals en route to the victory.
Union is at William Smith for a Liberty League game on April 7, while Vassar hosts New Paltz on April 4 in a non-league contest.
