ROCHESTER, NY -- Shelby Vakiener scored six goals to lead the Rochester Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 win over Union College Saturday. The win put the Tigers into next weekend's Liberty League Tournament, and RIT, Union and William Smith all finished regular season play with 7-2 league records. RPI (8-1) clinched home field and the top seed in the tourney with a win later Saturday at Skidmore.
The Liberty League Semifinal Games are Friday, May 4 at RPI and the Championship will also be at RPI on Saturday, May 5. Union is the #4 seed and will play the host Engineers at 2 p.m. Friday, while #2 seed RIT will play #3 seed William Smith at 4 p.m. Union is the only team to defeat RPI this season.
RIT is 10-6 overall while the Dutchwomen, who had a three game winning streak snapped, fell to 7-7 to conclude the regular season.
Vakiener also assisted on a goal and Rebecca Lampson scored twice for the Tigers. RIT got single goals from Marlee Vlassis, Lauren Azlein and Shleigh Caruso. Lampson's goal with 7:33 left proved to be the game winner.
Union was led by freshman Emily McGrail, who scored four goals and assisted on two others. heather Fraser scored twice while
Kat Egizi,
Tory Cameron,
Hilary Salander and
Brittany Fraser all had one goal each.
Katelyn Crane made nines for RIT while Kim Grinhaus stopped six shots for Union. The Dutchwomen outshot the hosts, 26-20, and had 23 ground balls while RIT was held to nine. Union won 13 of the 23 draws and was nine for 11 in clears while RIT was 14 for 16.
With the contest tied at 2-2, McGrail scored two goals and Union led 4-2 with 19:39 left in the first half. After a Vlassis goal Egizi made it 5-3 Union, but Vakiener scored three straight unassisted goals, including one with 11 seconds remaining in the half, to give RIT a 6-5 lead.
Heather Fraser tied it with just three seconds left in the half.
After Vakiener's fourth of the day 2:52 into the second half, Union scored three straight for a 9-7 lead, but RIT tied it at 9-9 with 14:08 left. McGrail gave Union a 10-9 advantage with 10:29 remaining, but at 8:04, Vlassis found Caruso and the Tigers knotted it up at 10-10. Lampson won it on a free position shot with 7:33 left to play.
