SCHENECTADY, NY -- Sebastiaan Jansen scored a first half goal and
Jake Soodek added insurance to lead the Union College men's soccer team to a 2-0 non-league win over SUNY Canton at College Park Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen improved to 7-2 on the year while Canton fell to 3-5-1.
Union doubled up the visitors in shots, 16-8, and also had a 9-7 advantage in corners. Canton goalkeeper William Banahene made seven saves while Union's
Ryan Carter had one stop.
On Union's first solid opportunity of the game,
Benjamin Golub fired a cross to Jansen, who headed the ball past Banahene at 9:38 for a 1-0 Dutchmen lead.
Canton almost tied it in the 16th minute. Shane Powell took a shot just outside the 18 yard box that was just high over the crossbar. In the 38th minute of play, Banahene made a tremendous save on a drive by
Nick Vozzella, who had taken an excellent feed from Union teammate
Sahr Nyuma.
Another opportuntity to tie for Canton came in the 42nd minute when Kevaughn John's shot was deflected off Union defenders and hit the crossbar. Canton's Keelon Joseph kept it at 1-0 when he headed the ball away from the goal line after Nyuma had a header heading toward the net from a corner kick feed.
Soodek's score off the rebound in the 58th minute provided the eventual 2-0 final.
The Dutchmen have seven regular season games remaining, all in Liberty League play. Next up is a matchup with local rival RPI at College Park on October 3 at 7 p.m.
