NORTH ADAMS, MASS. - The Salve Regina Seahawks scored a pair of second half goals as they held off defending champion Union College in the opening game of the 2012 CIAO Classic at Shewcraft Field. With the win, Salve is now 2-0 while Union falls to 2-1 overall.
Union used a first half tally from
Sebastiaan Jansen in the 20th minute as he headed home a free kick from
Kevin Janson. The lead would stand until the 50th minute when Salve would begin their rally.
Zachary Kraft collected a rebound off a Kyle Knoth shot to easily beat Union keeper
Ryan Carter tying the score. Just eight minutes later, the Seahawks would notch the eventual winner when Rainer Randell scored in the 58th minute.
Union had some quality chances late, but couldn't equalize. Salve outshot Union 16-7 on the afternoon and held an 8-3 corner kick advantage. Carter would finish with 6 saves in absorbing the loss, while Daniel Stern earned the victory stopping three shots.
Union will challenge SUNY-IT tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. at Shewcraft Field.
