Jennifer Mansfield scored in the first half, and senior goalkeeper
Kayla Marti made seven saves to lead the Union College women's soccer team (4-0) to a 1-0 win over Endicott College (2-1) in the opening game of the Union Women's Soccer Invitational.
Mansfield's team leading fourth goal of the season came in the 25
th minute, as Union's top two scorers helped the home team take an early lead.
Sophomore forward
Mollie Gilchrist found Mansfield mid-stride on a run into the box. Mansfield beat the Endicott back line and fired a low shot past goalkeeper Natalie Wyrsch at 24:56 to give Union a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Gulls had their best chance to even the contest early in second half as Endicott forward Nicole Fournier received a long pass inside the 18-yard box and volleyed a shot on net, but Marti came up with the save in the 51
st minute.
In the 79
th minute, Endicott forward Chelsea Garlock could not get enough force behind a header to beat Marti, who made an easy catch to preserve the one-goal lead for the Dutchwomen, who notched their fourth straight win to start the season.
Endicott nearly struck first in the sixth minute, but Union goalkeeper
Kayla Marti made a heads up play to keep the game scoreless early on. Endicott's Garlock broke behind the Union defense, but Marti came out from the goal line and made a sliding stop on Garlock's shot attempt.
Shots were even at 12-12 for the contest, but Endicott held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Marti and the Union defense earned their second shutout of the season.
Union will host SUNY Plattsburgh tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. while Endicott will take on Husson College at 3:00 p.m..
