SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior guard and co-captain
Kelsey McDonald hit a driving shot off the glass with nine seconds left in overtime to lift the Union College women's basketball team to a 66-65 Liberty League victory over league leading St. Lawrence Friday night at the Viniar Athletic Center. The loss was the Saints' first in seven league games, and the visitors fell to 12-4 overall. Union improved to 6-4 in league play and 11-7 for the season.
The Saints called a time out with five seconds left, but a pass in the lane went out of bounds as time expired. Kara McDuffee tied the game with two free throws with 56 seconds left in regulation to force the game into OT at 59-59. The OT featured four lead changes and a tie. Allison Cady's two free throws made it 65-62 Saints with 1:58 left but
Kate Thompson hit a layup with 29 seconds remaining to pull Union to within one at 65-64. The Dutchwomen got a rebound on a missed free throw with 22 seconds left and called timeout with 20 left to set up McDonald's eventual winner.
McDonald finished with 14 points and
Kristin Schmidt had 12.
Cailin Schmeer scored 11 with six rebounds (both career highs) and
Kate Thompson had a team best eight boards with seven points for the Dutchwomen. Union shot 42% for the game and outrebounded the Saints, 42-33.
Kelly Legg had a double double for Saint Lawrence with 13 points and 10 rebounds. McDuffee had a game high 17 points and Cady and Amanda Roberts also scored 12. Roberts also dished out a game high five assists.
St. Lawrence led 33-31 at the half. The Saints largest lead was six in the second half with 6:57 left on a jumper by Cady. Thompson's jumper with 1:14 left in regulation gave Union a 59-57 lead before McDuffee tied it up.
Union is back in action Saturday at Skidmore for a 2 p.m. league contest.
