Women's hockey takes 2-0 defeat to Rensselaer

TROY, N.Y. – The Union Dutchwomen (7-16-3, 0-11-3 ECAC) could not tally a goal as the Rensselaer Engineers (8-15-3, 6-7-1 ECAC) skate away with a 2-0 win and complete the weekend sweep at Houston Field House Saturday afternoon.

Rensselaer struck early has their first shot on target found the back of the cage as Jenn Godin dished the puck to Toni Sanders who netted one over the shoulder of Shenae Lundberg. The Engineers kept possession of the puck in the Dutchwomen third for much of the first, putting pressure on the Union defense. Wash was able to pad the Engineers' lead as she put away the loose puck that trickled away from Lundberg to put the Dutchwomen down 0-2.

Union was able to go on the power play three times in the second period but could not get one by Kelly O'Brien. Haley Welch and Emma Rambo had worthy chances from the point but the netminder was there for the stops. After RPI went back to full strength on their third penalty kill, Alexa Gruschow found herself one-on-one with Lundberg. Gruschow nearly put the Engineers up by three but her bid struck the goal post and ricocheted wide of the cage.

Rensselaer kept the Dutchwomen offense in check in the third period as O'Brien denied chances by Lizzy Otten and Rhianna Kurio. A fourth power play was given to Union but the offense could not capitalize on the man-advantage. Lundberg continued to be tested by the Engineers' attack and made 11 stops in the final period. Union opted for the extra skater in the final minutes of play but could not muster a goal as Rensselaer held on for the 2-0 win.

O'Brien earns the win as she improves to 7-13-2, making 11 saves in the shutout win. Lundberg is issued the loss and falls to 6-13-3, tallying 31 saves in the defeat. The Engineers held the advantage and faceoffs with a 33-11 and 21-19 advantage respectively. Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill as Union went 3-for-3 and RPI was 4-4.

Union will be on the road again as they will travel to central New York to take on Cornell and Colgate. The Dutchwomen will faceoff against the Big Red Friday, February 1 at 7:00 p.m. and Raiders on Saturday, February 2 at 4:00 p.m.
