Dutchwomen honor seniors with 9-0 win over Morrisville

SCHENECTADY, NY Nicole Merigliano, playing in the final game of her career, matched her season high with four goals to lead Union College to a 9-0 field hockey victory over Morrisville State Wednesday at Frank Bailey Field.

The Dutchwomen closed out the 2013 season with a 5-12 record after the non-league contest, while the Mustangs are 0-15-1. Prior to the game Union honored four seniors playing in the final games of their careers, Cate Degen, Ali Flake, Molly McCune and Merigliano.

Union outshot Morrisville, 48-6 and had a 6-5 advantage in corners. Mustang goalkeeper Nicole Gregg made 16 saves and Union goalie McCune stopped two.

The Dutchwomen dominated the first half with a 7-0 lead by halftime, and had a 34-3 shot advantage in the first 35 minutes. Ali Flake opened the scoring at 5:41 off her own rebound (her fourth score of the season) and Merigliano scored 1:10 later with a pass from Meggie Ferrari. Union made it 3-0 at 8:33 on Ferrari's unassisted goal when she came in from picking up a loose ball 10 yards out. Jessie Mulvey scored her second of the fall at 9:23, 50 seconds later, off a close rebound and it became 5-0 on Annie Reardon's second goal of the year at 12:28 (coming off a tight in pass from Merigliano). Merigliano scored the final two goals of the half at 18:23 and 23:46, with assists from Ali Flake and Allison Troy, respectively, at 18:23 and 23:46.

Union made it 8-0 at 36:26 on Merigliano's fourth of the game and third straight. She pulled it around a defender for the unassisted score. That gave Merigliano 18 goals on the year. Degen, a defender, scored her first of the year at 40:09 with a backhander off her own rebound on the left of the cage for the eventual 9-0 final.
