Vozzella lifts Dutchmen over Skidmore on senior day

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College men's soccer senior forward Nick Vozzella tallied an overtime goal with just 45 seconds remaining in the second OT session to lift the Dutchmen over Skidmore 2-1. Vozzella tallied his final goal of his Dutchmen career as the team finished tied for fifth in the Liberty League standings with a record of 12-3-2.

Seniors Vozzella, Dean Constant, Jake Soodek, James Skelton, Michael Allan, Kyle McCue and Josh Rothberg were honored before their final home game of their careers. Soodek also found the score sheet when he assisted on the game-tying goal in the second half.

The Dutchmen fell behind in the first half when Skidmore midfielder Adam Beek tallied a goal off a free kick. Beek's shot deflected off the left post before finding its way past junior goalkeeper Ryan Carter. The Thoroughbreds took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Dutchmen came out hungry in the second half as they found the equalizer in just 5:38 of playing time. Junior midfielder William Poetzsch crossed the ball from the left side of the Skidmore zone. Junior midfielder Daniel Miller deflected the cross past the Skidmore goalkeeper for his fourth goal of the season.

Both teams traded scoring chances down the stretch but were unable to find the back of the net. The second half ended with the teams tied at one. Union was the only team to muster a shot in the first overtime but Skidmore goalkeeper Eli Kisselbach made the save.

As the minutes faded away in the second OT it looked like the game was heading for a draw until at the 109:15 minute-mark the Dutchmen had a throw in by the Skidmore net. Sophomore midfielder Jeff Cohen threw the ball towards the net where Vozzella was able to gather the ball and rifle a shot to the bottom left corner of the net to give the Dutchmen the win in his final Union game.

Skidmore attempted 21 shots in the game but only forced Carter to make six saves. Union finished with 11 shot attempts, forcing the Kisselbach to make two saves. Skidmore held a slight advantage in corner kicks 6-4.

The Dutchmen end their season with a 12-3-2 record including a 4-3-2 record in Liberty League play. They were unbeaten at home with a 6-0-2 record.
