POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- Union College women's soccer team fell just shy of its bid to qualify for the Liberty League Tournament, losing 2-1 in overtime at Vassar. The Dutchwomen (9-7 overall) finished 4-4 in Liberty League play, missing out on one of the top four qualifing spots.
Brian Speck's team needed either a win or tie to advance, and their chances looked good in the 80th minute when
Whitney Bickford found the back of the net with a header off an assist from
Melissa Scinto.
Bickford's sixth goal tied the contest after Vassar had taken a 1-0 lead at 56:15 on Kelsey Hamm's first tally of the season.
The goals set up high-stakes drama in overtime and it was Vassar (9-7-2, 4-3-1 LL) that captalized for the game winner when Chloe Wheeler snuck a shot from the top of the box past Union goalkeeper
Allison Brustowicz. Brustowicz was kept busy the entire game, making 12 saves as Vassar dominated in total shots (31-8) and shots on goal (14-3).
The loss brought to a close the collegiate careers of six Union seniors --
Rachel Cohen,
Meghan Cole,
Nicole Collins,
Kelsey Fish,
Caroline Gorka and
Melissa Scinto -- a group that recorded four consecutive winning seasons and compiled an overall record of 50-19-1.
