SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – John Flete and Trevor Sykes each scored 22 points and Will Green added 19 in FDU-Florham's 90-73 win over Union College in the championship game of the 2013 Sig Makofski Invitational Tournament at Union's Viniar Athletic Center Sunday. The Devils are now 3-3 on the season, while the Dutchmen drop to 1-4 overall.
With 42 points on 14-of-21 shooting over two games, Flete was named the tournament MVP. The All-Tournament Team included Ed Ogundeko of Trinity College;
Ryan Whelpley and
Terell Winney of Union; and Trevor Sykes and Will Green of FDU-Florham.
FDU-Florham's Andrew Stress had a game-best nine rebounds, leading the Devils to a 37-36 edge on the boards for the game. Kevin Furlong posted 11 points and five assists, while Sykes dished out a game-best eight assists. The Devils shot 47.3% from the floor overall, including a 51.2% shooting percentage in the second half.
Winney led the Dutchmen with 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Whelpley added 10 points, hitting all four shots he attempted from the floor, and pulled down six rebounds.
FDU-Florham led the entire game, finishing the first half with a 33-27 edge. With its opening basket of the second half, Union cut the Devils' advantage to four before FDU-Florham netted seven straight points to take a 40-29 lead. The Devils led by as many as 23 points late in the game. The teams combined for 30 points during the last five minutes of the second half to finish the contest.
The Dutchmen return to action on Dec. 5 when they travel to Utica for a 7 p.m. matchup with SUNYIT.
