Tancrell-Fontaine tallies first goal of season in 4-1 loss at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – Union College women's ice hockey junior defenseman Alex Tancrell-Fontaine registered her first goal of the season in a 4-1 loss to Princeton on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. With the loss the Dutchwomen drop to 5-11-0 on the season and 2-6 in ECAC play.

Tancrell-Fontaine chipped in her first goal of the season during the second period to bring her point total on the season to eight (1-7-8). She was set up by junior defenseman Kelly McGrath and sophomore Kathryn Tomaselli on the play.

Just as they did the day before, Princeton took an early 1-0 lead courtesy of a short-handed goal. On Friday against Rensselaer it was senior Olivia Mucha who assisted fellow senior Denna Laing on the first line. Saturday, it was Laing who fed Mucha to put the Tigers up 1-0 just 4:01 into the first period. It was the Tigers' ECAC-leading fifth short-handed tally of the season.

Princeton extended its lead to 3-0 in the second session. Junior defender Ali Pankwoski, who on Friday picked up a helper on a blast from the blue line, found the back of the net herself at the 14:28 mark of the middle period. Only 3:30 later, sophomore Cristin Shanahan registered a goal from the left slot on the rush.

Fiona McKenna came through in the final two minutes of the third period to expand Princeton's advantage to 4-1 with her first career goal.

Sophomore Kimberly Newell stopped 10 Union shots, while Shenae Lundberg made 29 saves in goal for the Dutchwomen. The Tigers controlled the puck throughout the game thanks in part to winning 35 of the game's 54 faceoffs.

The Dutchwomen return home next weekend for their final games of 2013 when they host Maine for a two-game series on Friday and Saturday.
