Brittney Kenney scored 17 points with 11 rebounds to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a key 76-50 Liberty League victory at RPI Friday night. The win, coupled with William Smith's victory at Clarkson, keeps the Dutchwomen and Herons tied for the fourth and final playoff spot entering the final day of the regular season.
Union improved to 9-6 in the league, joining William Smith, and Union is 14-9 overall. The Engineers were eliminated from playoff contention, falling to 7-8 in league play and 13-11 overall.
Kelsey McDonald scored 16 with a game best five assists for the Dutchwomen, while
Cailin Schmeer was a perfect six for six from the floor and had a career best 14 points. Kenney recorded her third double double of the season and
Kate Thompson added nine points with eight rebounds for Union, which had a 52-34 rebounding advantage and shot 48%.
RPI graduate student and guard Sarah Wetmore broke two RPI records in the contest. Her 12th point broke the mark of 1,530 career points by Whitney Coleman '10. Wetmore's 16th point of the night gave her 492 points for the season, also breaking a mark held by Coleman. Wetmore finished with game highs of 20 points and seven rebounds. Bailei Tetrault, Jen Rock and Ashley Clough scored eight each for the Engineers, who were held to 23% shooting.
During the first 20 minutes, the hosts had an eight point advantage at 21-13 after a three pointer by Wetmore with 9:02 left. But the Dutchwomen went on a 13-4 run in the next 7:27 featuring five points from McDonald. The teams were knotted up at 29-29 at the half.
Over the first 4:54 of the second half, the Dutchwomen opened it up and held RPI to one field goal in a 16-2 run for a 45-31 lead. Union led by as many as 26 at 65-39 with 5:59 left.
The Dutchwomen host Vassar Saturday at 2 p.m. and will honor the lone senior on the squad, guard
Shayla Madden, prior to her last regular season home game. William Smith will play at St. Lawrence Saturday.The Dutchwomen have to win the Vassar game and St. Lawrence must defeat William Smith for Union to return to the Liberty League playoffs.
