Dutchwomen seniors honored, Union loses to #3 Cornell, 4-0

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Laurian Rougeau had a goal and an assist and Brianne Jenner added two assists to lead #3 Cornell University to a 4-0 win over Union College in an ECAC Hockey game at Messa Rink. The Big Red improved to 23-5-1 and finished league play with a 19-3-1 record, claiming first place and home-ice throughout the playoffs. The Dutchwomen close out 2012-13 with a 7-23-4 record and 0-18-4 slate in the league).

The Dutchwomen finish the 2012-13 campaign with the most wins under Coach Claudia Asano Barcomb's tenure with seven. In addition, Union set a new program-high in power play goals with 18 and even their ties record from last season with four.

Seniors Nicole Bartlett, Rhianna Kurio, Alana Marcinko, Emma Rambo and Jeannie Sabourin played in their final home game for the Dutchwomen ice hockey team. Kurio tied former teammate Dania Simmonds '12 all-time games played mark with 136. Bartlett, Kurio Rambo and Sabourin played in all 34 games for Union this season. Marcinko finishes her career tied for first in program shutouts with three and fifth in career saves with 1,271.

Lauren Slebodnick made 18 saves for the Big Red while Marcinko, playing in her sixth game of the season and starting in her final game, made 32 stops for Union.

Union had the first chance just 4:30 into the contest when Kathryn Tomaselli broke in to the left of Slebodnick, but her shot was stopped and bounced just over the net. Just under three minutes later, with the teams in a four-on-four situation after matching penalties, Bryanne Panchuck had two quality shots stopped.

Cornell took a 1-0 lead at 8:42 when Lauriane Rougeau came in to Marcinko's left and cut in front for the score after a pass from Jessica Campbell. It was Rougeau's sixth tally of the season. At 8:10, Laura Fortino notched her fourth of the season  for a 2-0 Cornell advantage. Rougeau and Anna Zorn assisted as Fortino took a point shot from the middle of the blueline that went through a crowd that screened Marcinko.  Cornell's Cassandra Poudrier had a chance for a third Big Red goal but she was stopped close in front with a solid save from the senior netminder.

Union's Jessica Kaminsky broke in at 3:30 with a scoring chance to the right of Slebodnick, but Cornell defenseman Alyssa Gagliardi made a sweep check to take the puck away. With just under two minutes to play Stefanie Thomson had a shot just wide close in front of the Cornell net.  The Big Red had a 10-4 shot advantage after the first period.

Neither team scored in the second stanza, and Union outshot the guests, 10-7. Union had a wrap around opportunity by Panchuk early in the period and in the final five minutes of the second, Marcinko made great saves on a break-in and deke by Brianne Jenner and a close drive by Cassandra Poudrier. Rebecca Babiak picked up the rebound of her top circle shot for another chance at 3:39 that was stopped, and Marcinko stuffed Jenner in the slot with 1:16 left in that second period.

After Union killed a Big Red power play, Cornell made it 3-0 at 4:18 of the third period. Fortino tucked in her fourth of the season with a pass from Jenner close to the cage. Union killed off another power play in the period. Cornell had an 18-4 shot advantage in the third and finished with 36 shots to Union's 18.
