POTSDAM, NY -- Fourteen different players scored for Union College as the Dutchwomen hit better than 50 percent of their shots in the first half to defeat the Clarkson University women's basketball team 62-39 in Liberty League action Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights fell to 3-17 overall and 1-11 in the Liberty League, while Union improved to 13-8 overall and 8-5 in conference play.
The Golden Knights took decent care of the ball in the first half, committing eight turnovers, but they could not convert from the field when they had open shots led by Union's defensive effort, shooting just 3-for-24 from the floor. The Dutchwomen also had eight offensive rebounds for second chances. Sixteen different players saw time in the first half for Union, led by
Kate Thompson, who was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field coming off the bench. Union took a 27 point lead into the half, 36-9, with a 54% shooting mark in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, Union pushed its lead into the mid-30s halfway through the period, but Clarkson started to make some shots from the perimeter and actually outscored the Dutchwomen in the final 20 minutes (30-26). Leighann Tomita finished with a game-high 12 points while Isabella Esposito added eight points for the Knights. For Union, three different players scored eight points, including Thompson,
Brittney Kenney, and
Carolyn Niedzwiecki. Five players led the guests with four rebounds each. Union shot 43% for the night and the Golden Knights shot 27% while being outrebounded 42-25.
The Dutchwomen travel to face St. Lawrence for a 2 p.m. league game Saturday.
