Faber shines in pitching debut in a 9-2 win against Sewanee

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Freshman Jamie Faber pitched for seven innings while only conceding one hit and struck out four batters en route to a 9-2 victory at the RussMatt Invitational Sunday morning.

Union stole a season-high nine bases in the win. Heck stole three of the nine bases and the Dutchmen went 9-for-10 on the base path in stolen attempts.

After a scoreless first inning, the Dutchmen were able to get on the board as Jason Cohen was able to knock in a RBI single to score Chris Donovan off of pitcher Mike O'Neil.

Faber pitched efficiently as he just allowed one runner on a walk in the seven innings he pitched. In the fifth inning, senior co-captain Dylan Katz-Wicks put on a suicide squeeze as Vince Esposito ran towards home base. Catcher Nick Barnett tried to put a play on first but opted to attempt to get out Esposito. The junior was able to step aside from the initial attempt and was able to scramble back to beat the tag to increase the lead to two. The following play, co-captain Tyler Heck reached base on a fielder's choice followed by stealing second and third base. Pinch hitter Matt Barretto was able to draw a walk. Head coach Paul Mound opted for the double steal as Barnett tried to throw out Barretto out at second. Whaley cut off the throw to try to stop Heck from stealing home but the throw was not on time as the Dutchmen lead increased to three.

In the sixth inning, the Dutchmen had their best offensive production, putting the game out of reach. Donovan started the inning by reaching on an error by Jack Rogers. Cohen was able to draw a walk and advanced on a throwing error. Anders Goetz padded the lead with a RBI single. Esposito was able to rope a single to send in Cohen and Donovan to add on more runs. Heck finished the scoring in the inning with a double to send around Goetz and Esposito.  Joe Bradlee added on one more run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly as Michael Fitzsimmons was on third base prior to a deep triple to center field. O'Neil was chased out of the game pitching 5 2/3 innings while conceding seven earned runs with four strikeouts.

After Faber left the game in the seventh, Sewanee was able to get some run production. Walker was able to lead the eighth inning with a double to the gap. James Snover followed with a double of his own to open the Tigers scoring. After a Ben Clune walk to load the bases, Blake Williams forced another walk to add on a run. However, Zach Borglum was able to force a 6-4-3 double play followed by a fly out to center field to escape the inning.

Reliever Quinn Rhoda came in the final inning as he let two runners on with a single by Walker and a walk by Grant Goodson. The sophomore was able to strike out Snover to earn the Dutchmen the win.

The Dutchmen will have 13 days off until their next match as they will host St. Lawrence at home in Central Park for back-to-back doubleheaders. The first doubleheader will be Saturday, March 23 at 1:00 p.m. while the following match will be on March 24, starting at 12:00 p.m.
