#14 Dutchmen lose lacrosse season opener to #1 Cortland

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Freshman attack James Stavrakis scored four goals and junior attack Cody Cunsul scored three times to lead #1 SUNY Cortland to a 10-1 non-league men's lacrosse victory at #14 Union College at Frank Bailey Field Saturday afternoon. The win by Cortland in the host team's season opener improved the Red Dragons to 2-0 on the young season.

Cortland scored six times in the second quarter after trailing 1-0 after the first stanza. Cortland had a 359-32 shot advantage, and was 22 for 23 in clear attempts. Mike Kaminski made 15 saves in the visiting net, and the Red Dragons won 11 of the 15 face offs while recording a 35-30 ground ball advantage for the game.
Union goaltender Stefan Basile made 14 saves.

The Dutchmen dominated in the first period, outshooting the Red Dragons, 13-5, but Kaminski allowed just one tally in the period. Richard Gregory got open behind defenders and took a long pass from midfield and Stephen Melia, firing home a goal with 5:22 left from 15 yards out. But the Red Dragons reversed things in the second with an 11-5 shot advantage, and took a 6-1 lead into the half. Mike Cantelli's second of the year came at 12:51 with a shot through a crowd close in front, and Consul's third of the young season at 9:45 was a 15 yard bounce shot assisted by Benjamin Dunlavey for a 2-1 Corltand lead. Zach Hoops scored at 5:35 with his fourth from Consul, a pass across the cage tucked in to the left of the goaltender, and Hopps then returned the favor for Consul's fourth of the year 27 seconds later with a back-and-forth pass play 12 yards out for a 4-1 lead. Stravakis scored his first two of the season at 4:13 and at 2:38, both unassisted, for the 6-1 lead.

Kaminski made solid stops on Union's Nate Greenburg under two minutes into the second half and on Rob Santangelo's tuck in try on the right side with just over 10 minutes left in the period. Consul's fiffh of the year came at 6:59 from Dunleavey's pass behind the net and Stravakis' third from Dunleavey came from the right doorstep for an 8-1 lead with just 1:26 left in the third period.

Stravakis' fourth of the day at 9:32, eight yards out, was unassisted and Billy Davis closed out the scoring at 6:44 with a drive from 20 yards out. Both scores were unassisted.

Union continues a three game homestand to open the season next Wednesday, when the Dutchmen host SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m. Babson will come to Schenectady for a game next Saturday at 1 p.m.
