Baseball opens season with doubleheader sweep over Clark

Box Score 2

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Dutchmen opened the season with a pair of complete game wins from Dane O'Neil and Phil Kemp as Union prevailed in wins of 10-0 and 9-1 respectively over Clark. Catcher David Peretti sparked the offense registering six RBI's in the two games at the RussMatt Invitational Thursday afternoon.

In game one, Dane O'Neil pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits over seven innings while striking out six and walked three. Catcher David Peretti provided the offense for the Dutchmen with a pair of triples in a 10-0 win over Clark University in their season opener at Land of Lakes Park Thursday afternoon.

After a quick first inning for both squads, Clark threatened to break the scoring in the top of the second. Austin Knief and Zachary Richall were able to reach base on singles. The Cougars eventually loaded the bases on the Daniel Lima walk with just one out in the inning. However, O'Neil was able to get Michael Eglow to groundout to third and Mitch DeLorenzo to strikeout looking to escape the jam.

Matt Barretto gave the Dutchmen their first run, as he was able to score Peretti in on a single to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Union tacked on more runs in the following inning as Peretti stroked a triple to right field, scoring Tyler Heck from first to cushion the lead. Vince Esposito then struck a ball to deep left field, allowing Peretti to tag from third to earn the sacrifice fly.

Leading 3-0 into the fifth inning, the Dutchmen continued to add onto their lead. Peretti and Esposito hit back-to-back doubles, each scoring an RBI to increase the lead to five. Cohen and Anders Goetz each provided singles that scored in runs to complete a four run fifth inning.

O'Neil continued to pitch well as he limited the Clark offense to just two hits in the final three innings. The Union offense was able to add three more runs to come away with the 10-0 shutout.

In the second game of the afternoon, Phil Kemp and Crocker faced off on the mound. Each pitcher surrendered a run through the first two innings. Eric Egan broke the deadlock as he singled a ball to center field to score Esposito. Kenney tied the game with a single of his own to score Conway.

Union went ahead again in the third, as Peretti was able to strike a single to left center to bring around Dylan Katz-Wicks. However, Crocker was able to escape the inning surrendering the one run.

The Dutchmen were able to put up six runs in the sixth inning as Katz-Wicks, Heck, Peretti and Caruso all registered RBI's in the inning.
Kemp was able to break up five hits over seven innings in the complete game win, striking out seven while only conceding one walk.
Union will be back in action tomorrow as the Dutchmen will compete against Wittenburg in a nine-inning contest tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m.
