WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. –
Tyler Heck batted 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and three stolen bases. However, a Dutchmen rally in the ninth was abruptly ended as Williams edges out Union 8-7 in out-of-conference play.
Union got out to an early 5-1 lead, but Williams battled back to lead, 8-6, after six innings. Williams held off a ninth-inning rally by Union to win. With the win, Williams moves to 14-20 overall, while Union falls to 21-9.
Reliever Eddie Kelly (1-0) got the win for Williams, going 2.0 scoreless innings in relief. Union starter
Andrew Beaule (0-1) took the loss, surrendering seven runs (six earned) in 4+ innings of work. Williams closer Jimmy Ray picked up his fourth save of the year.
The Dutchmen were able to pounce first on the Ephs as Union were able to manufacture a pair runs on stolen bases by
Vincent Esposito and
Tyler Heck. Union added one more in the top of the second with a groundout RBI by
Anders Goetz to score Micheal Fitzsimmons.
Williams' offense surged, putting together seven of its eight runs in the following four innings. However, Union's bats kept pace as
Jamie Faber and
Eric Egan were able to register RBI's in the third inning.
Ephs catcher Phil McGovern had a key three-RBI triple that tied the game in the fifth, and second baseman Marco Hernandez had the RBI that gave Williams a 7-6 lead in the same inning. For Union,
Tyler Heck went 2-3 with two walks.
Union will return to action with a game at Utica on Thursday, May 2 at 4:00 PM. Williams next plays a non-conference doubleheader at Suffolk on Saturday, May 4 at noon.
