Dutchmen offense powers series sweep over Rochester

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – The Dutchmen offense managed to score 10 runs in each of Sunday's games as Union earned a series sweep over Rochester at Shuttleworth Park Sunday afternoon.

Pitchers Seth Roberts and Corey King faced off in the first half of the doubleheader. After a scoreless first inning for both squads, the Dutchmen were able to strike first. Union started the scoring in the top of the second with a leadoff walk by Jamie Faber. After a sacrifice bunt and an error, Chris Donovan was able to hit a single into left field to score Faber from third for the game's first run.

After conceding leadoff hits to Vince Esposito and Dylan Katz-Wicks, it looked like King was going to escape a third inning jam. However, an error by the left fielder and a wild pitch allowed Union to score three more times in the inning to increase the Dutchmen lead to four.

Roberts and the Dutchmen infield continued to silence the Yellow Jackets offense, as Union was able to induce double plays in the third, fourth and fifth inning to keep Rochester off the scoreboard. However, Rochester was able to get a run off Roberts in the six inning. Sam Slutsky was able to strike a double into left field with only one out. After registering the second out, Josh Ludwig was able to tally an RBI on a double to right field to easily score Slutsky.

Union was able to put the game out of reach in the seventh inning. The seven-run inning was highlighted by Anders Goetz taking a pitch to the opposite field that cleared the right field wall with the bases loaded to give the Dutchmen a commanding 10-1 lead.

Roberts came out to close the seventh inning to retire the side to earn the complete game win, improving his record to 2-1. King was handed the loss as his overall record fell to 2-3.
In game two, Jamie Faber and Stephen Cool took the mound. The Dutchmen quickly pounced on Cool in the opening inning as Esposito and Katz-Wick went for back-to-back doubles and was able to get two quick runs on the Yellow Jackets.

Esposito, the reigning Liberty League Performer of the Week, was able to stroke his second double of the game that scored in Jimmy Mulpeter for the game's third run in the top of the second.

The Dutchmen were able to pad their lead in the top of the third as Michael Fitzsimmons registered a RBI single and Sam Caruso connected for a home run to make it 6-0 Union.

Despite the Yellow Jackets getting runners on in each of the first four innings, Faber was able to escape each inning unharmed. However, the Yellow Jackets were able to produce a run in the fifth. Slutsky led the inning with a single followed by a sacrifice bunt from Steve Eychner. Ludwig scorched a double into the gap to score Slutsky to reduce the deficit.

However, Union was able to put up two runs in the top of the sixth and eighth innings with RBI singles from Tyler Heck and David Peretti.

The Yellow Jackets tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth inning as Brian Munoz singled through the right side to score Brenden Garry. Additionally, in the ninth inning Eychner and Ludwig reached base with one out. Despite their efforts, Quinn Rhoda was able to tally a strikeout and force a foul out to third to end the game.

Faber improved to 2-0 on the season while Cool fell to 2-1 on the campaign.

The Dutchmen will host St. Lawrence in a midweek contest on Tuesday, April 9, starting at 1:00 p.m.
