SCHENECTADY, NY -- SUNY Plattsburgh scored four runs in the eighth inning to pull out an 8-4 extra inning win over Union College in the second game of a softball doubleheader at Alexander Field Tuesday. The Cardinals won the opener over the host Dutchwomen, 2-0. Plattsburgh improved to 14-10 overall and Union is now 6-15 after the non-league doubleheader.
In the nightcap, the Dutchwomen got two runs in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to tie it.
Samantha Chevalier and
Joanna Chalifoux had RBI singles in the inning. But the Cardinals also did two out damage in the top of the eighth, with an RBI single by Emily McDonagh, a two run double by Samantha Tenney and an RBI double by Kerry McCarty. Megan Price had two hits and two RBIs in the game and Kristein Gay had two hits to stake Ashley Marshall (12-4) to the win. Marshall pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief, giving up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out three.

Aimee Palleschi , Chevalier and Chalifoux had two hits each for the Dutchwomen. Wolejko and Palleschi each had an RBI in Union's two run fifth, which had given the Dutchwomen a 2-1 lead. But back to back doubles by Price and McDonagh made it 4-2 in the top of the sixth for Plattsburgh.
In the opener, Marshall gave up just four hits and struck out 11 while walking just one in a complete game victory. Staats was the tough luck loser, as she allowed just one earned fun and five hits with a walk while striking out nine. Plattsburgh scored an unearned run in the first and Brianna Clarke added an insurance run with an RBI single in the third. Wolejko had two hits for the Dutchwomen.
Union plays at Utica on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. The Dutchwomen, 3-1 in Liberty League play, host RPI Sunday at Alexander Field at 1 p.m.
