LOUDONVILLE, NY -- Junior outfielder
Vincent Esposito singled in the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the 10th to lead top seed Union College to a 3-2 victory over #4 Vassar College at Siena Field Friday afternoon. The Dutchmen improved to 25-11 while the Brewers fell to 17-19-1.
Union will face rival RPI at 1 p.m. Friday, while Vassar will play St. Lawrence at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning. The Engineers defeated the Saints, 8-0 in the earlier game Thursday.
With Union trailing 2-1 after the top of the 10th,
Sam Caruso led off the bottom of the inning with an infield single.
Joe Bradlee bunted him over to second, and Andrew Getz walked. A passed ball put the runners at second and third, setting the stage for Esposito, who singled to right. After Caruso scored to tie the contest, Getz scored on a close play at the plate as he dislodged the ball from the catcher to cap the comeback victory.
Vassar had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th. Mike Perrone reached on an infield error, went to second on a passed ball, and after a pop out and an intentional walk, scored on an RBI single to center by Nick Johnson.
Union's
Andrew Beaule improved to 1-1, pitching one third of an inning in the 10th. The loss went to Connor Cucalon (3-2), who pitched one and 1/3 innings. The starters were outstanding as the game was tied at 1-1 after nine innings. Union's
Dane O'Neil gave up six hits and one earned run while striking out three in nine innings, while Vassar's Joe Lovizio allowed just four hits and one earned run in eight innings while striking out three.
Vassar's first run came in the top of the first. Perrone led off the game with a single and stole second. Brooks English singled and send Perrone to third. A double play brought in Perrone for the lead.
Union tied it in the fourth as
Tyler Heck singled and stole second.
David Peretti butnted him over to third, and Eric Egen's ground out to short scored Heck for the 1-1 tie in the fourth.
The Dutchmen will take on Renssealer tomorrow, May 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Siena Baseball Field.
