SCHENECTADY, NY- The Union College men's soccer team defeated the United States Merchant Marine Academy 2-1 on the second day of the Union Soccer Classic to defend their title  Union Soccer Classic champions.
While the game got off to a back-and-forth start, things soon got intense when Dutchmen sophomore defender
Sam Hunter was issued a yellow card at the 35:20 minute-mark. A little over two minutes later Mariner senior defender Kyle Parker was also issued a yellow card for an incident around the Merchant Marine goal.
Union finally opened the scoring late in the first half when junior midfielder
Kevin Janson was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. Janson fired a shot to the lower right side of the net where it deflected off the outstretched hands of senior goalkeeper Gary Poulin and into the back of the net.
Union capitalized on their late half momentum by adding another goal early in the second half. Junior midfielder
Daniel Miller won a battle near the Mariner net and fired a shot to the bottom right of the net. Miller's first goal of the season came at the 49:42 minute-mark and was unassisted.
USMMA senior forward Tim Hughes added a late goal in the final minute to close the gap to one. Hughes headed a cross from freshman defenseman Brennan Becker that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net.
Dutchmen junior goaltender
Ryan Carter picked up his second victory on the season with a three save performance. Mariner senior goaltender made one save in the contest.
The Dutchmen return to action next Saturday when they travel to North Adams, MA for the MCLA CIAO Fall Classic. They will take on MCLA on Saturday and Castleton State College on Sunday. Both games are scheduled for noon.Â
