SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union College volleyball team won both matches Saturday in the Union College Invitational at the Viniar Athletic Center. The all-tournament team featured Union's
Rachel Wyman and
Marissa Vollmer.
In the first match of the day, the Dutchwomen downed Cortland in four games. The scores were 27-25, 25-20, 24-26 and 25-16. In the nightcap, the Dutchwomen defeated Nazareth, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 25-15 and 15-13 to improve to 9-2.
Against Cortland,
Lauren Woods had 13 kills and
Ally VanDoren and
Rachel Wyman posted 11 kills each.
Amanda Price dished out 22 assists and
Mackenzie Westfall had 14 assists while
Marissa Vollmer recorded 21 digs and VanDoren added 20.
Union trailed 25-24 in the first set but forced three attack errors to close out the win. The Dutchwomen tied it at 25-25 when Woods recorded a block. The game was back and forth, with neithere team leading by more then four points throughout. In the second game, It was tied at 18-18 and Wyman had three kills down the stretch as the Dutchwomen outscored the Red Dragons, 7-2 to finish and take a commanding 2-0 set lead. In the third set, another tight contest ensued. There were ties of 21-21 and 23-23 (coming on a Woods kill) but the Red Dragons pulled out the 26-24 win. Union opened up a 14-12 lead with an 8-2 run and Woods wrapped up the match victory with a kill for a 25-16 win.
Against Nazareth, Wyman recorded 15 kills and
Kelley White added 10 kills. Prie had 28 assists and VanDoren posted 11 digs. Union got a team high 20 digs from Vollmer in the victory. Williams won the tournament due to less sets lost but the Dutchwomen posted three wins in three contests for the two day tourney.
Union is at Skidmore on September 17 and returns home on October 12 to host Husson and Keene State.
