SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's basketball team defeated Clarkson 60-51 on Friday evening at the Viniar Athletic Center. Brittany Kenney led the Dutchwomen with 15 points, five rebounds and a steal.
The first half featured excellent defense with only 41 points, as Union led 22-19, and the team combined for 27 turnovers. The Golden Knights jumped out to the early lead 8-4. The Golden Knights would hold the lead until the final moments of the half when the Dutchwomen gained the edge. The first half ended with
Kelsey McDonald hitting a three-pointer to give the Dutchwomen the lead entering the break.
Union came out firing in the second half after increasing their lead to nine in the first five minutes of the half. Clarkson would cut the lead to two but the Dutchwomen pulled away down the stretch thanks to
Cailin Schmeer's four free-throws in the final minute of play.
Schmeer finished the game 12-15 from the charity stripe in addition to 1-2 from the field. She also forced four turnovers and tallied two assists.
Kate Thompson and
Kelsey McDonald added 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Dutchwomen shot 41.5% from the field on their 41 attempts. Union hit only one of their eight three pointers in the game. Union played hard on the glass, recording eight second chance points in the second half.
The Dutchwomen return to action tomorrow when they travel to Saratoga Springs to take on Skidmore in their first matchup with the Thoroughbreds of the season.
