SCHENECTADY, NY -- Brittney Kenney scored a season high 19 points and the Union College women's basketball team had only five turnovers on the night in an 83-62 win over William Smith in a Liberty League game at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night. The Herons lost for the first time in eight league games and fell to 14-3 overall while the Dutchwomen, now 3-3 in the league, are 11-4 for the season.
Cailin Schmeer scored 17, her season high, and
Amy Loya had 12 with a team high eight rebounds for Union.
Kate Thompson added 10 points with six rebounds and
Kelsey McDonald had nine points with seven assists and six boards. Union shot 49% and held the Herons to 38% shooting for the night while pulling down 42 rebounds to the Herons' 29.
Sasha Borenstein led William Smith with 14 points and Erin O'Brien and Ali Pliszka scored 10 each. Chloe Hayter led all players with nine rebounds, eight on the defensive side, and Jacqueline Murphy pulled down seven boards for William Smith, which shot 61% from three point territory (11 for 18).
Union led by as many as 10 in the first half, with a 37-27 lead with 1:15 left in the first after a layup by Thompson. The Dutchwomen had a 37-30 advatange after the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, the Dutchwomen only turned the ball over two times. Union led by 16 at 14:07 with a 51-35 score after a three by Kenney. The Dutchwomen had three more 16 point leads before getting it up to 18 at 64-46 with 10:03 on the board after a McDonald three. The largest lead was 21 at 3:57 with a 77-56 score and the final, as
Amy Fisher made a layup with 1:25 for the 83-62 score.
Union is back in action Friday at RPI at 6 p.m. then completes the busy week with another Liberty League home contest, Saturday vs. Bard at 2 p.m.
