SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College women's hockey sophomore forward
Kathryn Tomaselli tallied an unassisted goal in overtime to lift the Dutchwomen past RIT 2-1 on Friday evening at Messa Rink. With the win the Dutchwomen improve to 7-12-0 while the Tigers fall to 9-11-1.
Tomaselli stole a puck from a defender in the corner and powered her way to the front of the net for her team-leading ninth goal of the season with only 1:09 left in the overtime session. The overtime win is their first since Oct. 22, 2011 when they took on the Orange from Syracuse.
With the win, the Dutchwomen have tied a program record for season wins with seven. The Dutchwomen need just one more win to eclipse the mark they set in the 2012-13 season.
Senior forward
Stefanie Thomson scored the tying goal with a little over five minutes left in the third period. Thomson broke through two defenders and dove to push the puck through RIT goaltender Ali Binnington's sprawled pads. She was set up by junior forward
Christine Valente and sophomore forward
Jamie Smith.
The Dutchwomen held the high powered Tigers power play off the board on their three attempts in the first two periods. Both teams stayed out of the box in the third period.
The Dutchwomen were the first to allow a goal when Celeste Brown fired a wrist shot past junior goaltender
Shenae Lundberg halfway through the third period.
Both goaltenders played strong games as Binnington racked up 20 saves to Lundberg's 19.
Both teams return to action tomorrow for a rematch at Messa Rink at 4 p.m.
